Within the framework of the restoration science project on the important mural painting cycle on the sciences and arts in the Cathedral cloister in Brandenburg an der Havel, funded by the German Research Foundation, it was possible, thanks to interdisciplinary cooperation, to make the original appearance of the late Gothic painting fragments digitally visible and comprehensible again. The methods and techniques developed for this purpose provide helpful tools for future conservation and preservation practice as well as for art historical research. Other current projects expand the important discussion about our future restorative approach using representative case studies, with application of various digital techniques. In a practical and interdisciplinary dialogue, we want to question to what extent the new digital techniques lead to more restraint in restorative measures on the original, and what impact this could have on the appreciation of cultural monuments on the part of owners and users and the interested public.
The conference will be framed by collaborative visits to medieval wall paintings in the city of Brandenburg and its proximity. To begin with, we will walk under expert guidance on the afternoon of April 27 from St. Katharina via St. Johannis to the Cathedral cloister. On April 30, there will be an excursion to medieval wall paintings in the Mark Brandenburg. An accompanying book with the final documentation of this DFG project will be published for the conference.
Almost all lectures will be held in German. A simultaneous translation will not be possible.
Registration is online on our conference website.
