The Excessive Use of Force

With 13 short lectures and three keynotes, the third TraCe Annual Conference will cover a broad conceptual range: from excessive violence and legal frameworks in past and present on an international scale, civil wars and intrastate violence to questions of (re-)establishing justice following the use of excessive violence.

30 October - 01 November 2024 | Justus Liebig University Giessen, Ludwigstrasse 23, 35390 Giessen

Recent developments are increasingly calling into question existing norms and practices intended to contain political violence: Researchers address this issue by discussing legal frameworks in past and present, intrastate violence as well as civil society's demands for justice following the use of excessive force.

In three keynotes, Giessen-based historian Prof. Dr. Horst Carl will look at excessive violence in the fight against rebellious peasants 500 years ago and Hamburg-based political scientist Prof Dr Hanna Pfeifer will examine violence by state and non-state actors in West Asia and North Africa.

We are especially excited to welcome our Scientific Advisory Board Member Prof. Dr. Eyal Benvenisti (teaching at University of Cambridge) who will speak about the recent International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion in his Keynote “Excessive Occupation”.

The conference starts with a dialogue panel in German: “Darstellungen exzessiver Gewalt – zwischen Verstörung und Attraktion”.

The dialogue panel, held in cooperation with the Kunsthalle Giessen, will shed light on depictions of excessive violence in a multi-perspective setting.

The TraCe Annual Conference 2024 is organized by Thilo Marauhn and TraCe at Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen.
