Die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise, die Flucht- und Migrationsdynamiken, geopolitische Verschiebungen, der Brexit, erstarkender Populismus und jüngst die Corona-Pandemie: Die Solidarität und die Kooperationsbereitschaft innerhalb Europas werden immer wieder neu herausgefordert. Wie steht es also um den Zusammenhalt in Europa? Und wie lässt er sich stärken? Diese Fragen stehen im Zentrum einer Förderlinie des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF). Gefördert werden 19 sozialwissenschaftliche Projekte, die aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven den Zusammenhalt in Europa untersuchen. Die Themen reichen von Fußball und Religion als Grundlage des Zusammenhalts über die Rolle Jugendlicher im Spannungsfeld zwischen Zusammenhalt und Polarisierung bis hin zu Fragen nach der europäischen und nationalen Identifikation für gelebte Solidarität in Europa. Zum Auftakt der Förderung veranstaltet das BMBF in Kooperation mit dem DLR Projektträger eine internationale Online-Konferenz. Vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft stellt Thomas Rachel, Parlamentarischer Staatssekretär bei der Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung, die Ziele der Förderlinie vor. Die Keynote des niederländischen Kulturhistorikers Joep Leerssen (Universität Amsterdam), Gewinner des Madame de Staël Prize 2020, widmet sich dem Thema “Europe as a transnational space of interaction”. Zudem werden exemplarisch die Forschungsfragen und -ansätze ausgewählter Projekte vorgestellt, die ganz unterschiedliche Facetten des Zusammenhalts in Europa beleuchten. Daniel Thym (Universität Konstanz und Forschungsinstitut Gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt) führt durch die Veranstaltung. Die Veranstaltungssprache ist Englisch.
